Vanessa Hersey of Cade Middle School has been named Educator of the Week. She is described as a person of integrity, going beyond the call of duty for her students each day.
Vanessa Hersey is an 8th grade science teacher and helps her students to bring the subject of science to life. Every day she teaches 134 students how to understand the ways they can use what she teaches them in their daily lives.
“For me, she tells me what I’m made of like atoms, and the particles and then the neutrons. She tells us how the universe and stars are helpful, keeping us warm. Just good stuff like that,” said student Zachary Ledbetter.
“It was kind of hard for me this year, but she made a big difference in my life and made it easier where I can understand it,” said another of Hersey’s students Ashton Walyuchow.
Vanessa Hersey is patient with her students; helping to accommodate different learning styles and showing interest in her students. This allows her to learn the goals and interests of her students. This relationship she builds with her students makes the students comfortable approaching her for help.
“I really didn’t get atoms or things we are learning now. But when I came into 8th grade, I knew it was going to be a different year and an awesome year,” said student Lauren Cantu.
When asked what she wanted her students to remember about her Vanessa Hersey responded, “To really enjoy each other and to love learning. To find their passion and find what they are good at. Because they are all good at something, they all have a gift.”
