This weeks Educator of the Week is Brandi Reyes, a first grade teacher at Vickers Elementary. Reyes is in her second year of teaching and is incredibly passionate, wanting to make a difference in each of her 1st grade students, as she helps to lay down a foundation for learning.
Reyes discovered her love of teaching as a volunteer, helping out in her daughter’s kindergarten class. Now she teaches 20 first graders in her very own classroom at Vickers.
Her class is very structured, packing together phonics, reading, language skills, science and social studies. But even with this high paced environment her students are ready for the daily challenge.
"I like to read books. And she helps us read some big words that we can't read," said student Jax Ragnow.
Another student, Judith Bray, said "I like when she gives out a paper and we get to write a lot of stuff to put in a box."
Reyes says that her students love all the hands on learning. She says that it gives her students a sense of accomplishment and pride when they successfully complete a task.
Student Jade Davis said, "I like my teacher, because she is nice, and she makes learning fun all the time for us."
But as much as her students love her class, Brandi Reyes loves being able to help each of her students to succeed.
"It makes me feel good that I can help them, learn what they need to know to go on to the next grades, bonding with each one of them,” said Reyes.
