This weeks Educator of the Week is Monica Wayman. Ms. Wayman is helping students out of their shells by teaching Communications Applications. She teaches 9th through 12th grade students about speech, debate and theatre at Victoria West High School. Ms. Wayman was also a reporter for Newscenter 25 a few years ago.
Today she is helping her students write papers on unusual topics like living a life in the circus or the best way to eat an Oreo cookie. Ms. Wayman says that this exercise helps students become creative in their writing skills, and her students love it.
"She's awesome. Just 100% awesome. Taught me how to speak better in debate class. Learning how to debate 2 points together. I never knew how to do that so that's one thing I picked up this year from Ms Wayman," said student Bryson Barnes.
"She's not really like a teacher, she is inspirational. I joined debate because of her. She was one of my theatre teachers when I was an elementary kid. I did theatre Victoria and I started it because of her," remarked Chase Bennette, one of Ms. Wayman’s students.
Despite having a teaching load of 130 students a say, Monica Wayman has a personal relationship with each of her students; learning about their hobbies, family, and the sports that they play. Her close relationship with the students makes them feel comfortable approaching her with a problem in class or problems they have in their personal life.
One student, Annalicia Aguilar, said "It's not that she is such a great teacher. She is also a great friend. But yet she still keeps personal boundary lines there. That's why I really like her.”
Ms. Wayman has the relationship with her students every teacher strives for and she uses that close bond to help her students pursue greatness.
"I try to push my students to have high goals, high expectations and not give up on their dreams," commented Ms. Wayman.
