Margaret Loflin Named Educator Of The Week

This week’s Educator of the Week is Margaret Loflin, of Cade Middle School. She is helping students to take an artistic approach to life. Margaret Loflin often tells her student that they all can be artistically creative, no matter what their background or ability.

Loflin encourages her students to draw, even if they are unable to make a straight line. She teaches 147 students a day in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade and wants to enlighten the class to look at their surroundings and find the beauty in drawing objects to make them come alive.

"She helped me a lot. And I'm truly better than I thought I would ever draw in my life," said student Tyler Yaws.

Another of her students Spencer Bailey talked about the different skills Margaret Loflin taught saying, "She taught me different techniques. Like how to draw 3-D, and make stuff like it's popping out of the paper."

At this time, all of her students are working on a project for the Houston Livestock Show. Drawing from photographs, they are using their own style to create a western art drawing. It is an exercise that gives student the liberty to elaborate with their own style, but just in case, Loflin is quick to give personal attention to those who need a little extra help.

"What I enjoy most about teaching art is that I really want my students to be successful. I think every student can be creative no matter what their background, history or how talented they are. I believe every student has an opportunity to be taken to the next level," said Margaret Loflin.

Art student Cristos Hernandez talked about the fun art brings to class saying, “On Fridays we have a chance to sketch off the top of our heads. And she just makes art fun."
