This week’s Educator of the Week is Science teacher Serapio Orta Jr. from
Mr. Orta teaches 130 students a day and he ignites a passion for science in many of his students by making it, not only practical and easy to understand, but fun. While his students are hard at work in the lab, Mr. Orta is always right along side of them, helping to build a strong bond between students and appreciation of science in the real world.
Student Star Chambers talked about Mr. Orta’s teaching saying that, “Mr. Orta helps us study outside of school to where we can get better grades by sending us power points and extra notes that we need. And help us to learn computers in the outside world."
"I tell him that I have trouble with something and he will come break it down to the smallest piece to where it's easier,” said student Lakayla Williams.
Orta is always looking to re-invent himself in order to add a new dimension to his classes. He does this by learning more about his students and watching how quickly they learn.
Orta says that in come cases he grows right along with the kids through the learning process.
"When I come to work, I want to have fun right along with the kids, because if I have just a boring worksheet, it’s probably going to be boring for the kids too. So I try to incorporate as much fun as possible," said Mr. Orta.
One of his students, McKaylah Lopez, agrees saying, “He's made a difference in my character, because he doesn't stand for any late work. So it teaches me to be a better person, and it helps me in all my classes. It shows me that teachers won't let you slack off. They will be strict with their work and that's what helps me get an A-B honor roll."
