Amazing Connection Between Hospital Patient And Nurse

Here is a story you do not hear every day. A Crossroads businessman had a serious health scare back in 2009 and wound up having three surgeries in a span of just 23 days. In between procedures, he met a young nurse on staff at Citizens, but it wasn’t the first time they had met.
That young nurse found out that she shared an Alma Mater with the man she was taking care of, and his wife, who also happened to be a nurse. But that is just where the coincidences begin in this surprising story.
"I always say that you get out of life what you put in it... And when you give something, you always get more back…Always," said Claud Jacobs, a Crossroads Businessman.
That saying came to life for Claud Jacobs when he wound up in the Emergency Room here at Citizens just 12 days after having open heart surgery back in 2009.
"We really didn't know what was going on at the time…I was in severe pain, and they didn't know
why…They didn't know what it was, I was one scared guy."
Jacobs underwent a series of surgeries and then spent about three weeks in the hospital recovering. That is when he notices there was something familiar about the nurse taking care of him.
"I was doing my usual assignments…And then his face hit me, we kept poking at how we knew each other and finally a mutual friend made the connection that we had met at UT," explained Citizens Medical Center Nurse, Trina Sommerlatte.
The Texas Exes realized they first met in 2005 at an event honoring people who both fund and receive Nursing Scholarships at UT. The next moment, the Jacobs’ realized that their money had gone to help educate and train the woman who would eventually help save Claud’s life.
"She stepped back when we realized that that was the scholarship, and I looked at Mary Virginia and tears were coming down her eyes, I was in tears, we couldn't talk and Trina was the same way," said Claud Jacobs.
Jacobs set up the scholarship in memory of his mother-in-law, who also aspired to be a nurse.
"The scholarship was amazing. It helped ease some of the burden... Going to Nursing School, not having to work an extra job to help pay for school," commented Trina Sommerlatte.
Now, considering all of the coincidences, Claud’s saying about giving has also come to life for Trina.
"The money that you give always comes back…For me, it made a big point. Giving back does work."
Trina has been working at Citizens for the past 5 years now, and she keeps in touch with the Jacobs family who say they are now trying to get her to go back to school and get her Masters.
