    "Numbers help us. They tell us what is going on in an area, neighborhood, or part of town…We can tell that by looking at the numbers," explained Chief Jeff Craig.
    Chief Craig commented on how the Victoria Police Department uses the crime statistics to ensure that police units are deployed correctly to provide adequate resources for each part of town. But looking at the numbers from the crime statistics is also effective in determining if individuals are committing crimes in certain parts of Victoria while also showing specific crimes that are on the rise.
    “This year we will pay attention to residential burglary, because we have seen a slight increase over last year's numbers. That's an area to focus a great deal of attention on,” said Chief Craig.
    According to Victoria Police statistics, there were also none more reported cases of rape in 2011 than there were in 2010.
    “I'm sensitive to the fact that that's on the rise, but some of that is possibly due to victims becoming more comfortable in calling us,” explained Chief Craig.
    But out of 29 Texas cities, Victoria ranks 8th when looking at the numbers used by the FBI to determine how many “Class One” crimes occur annually; Chief Craig with the Victoria Police Department commented on this ranking saying, “People are proud of the fact that they have lived in Victoria for years and haven't had to lock their doors. But what these numbers tell me is that, unfortunately, we do live in a society where we have to take more precautions.”
    Chief Craig says citizens practicing standard safety precautions, along with a dedicated police force, are reasons for the drop in numbers. Chief Craig also says tools like social and public service announcements have helped contribute to the lowered crime rate.
    “Victoria is a very safe city, but at the same time... I'm looking forward to this year. If we can capitalize on further reductions of these numbers I'll be very, very, happy,” proclaimed Chief Craig.
