Gas Prices Hurting Victoria Senior Citizens Association

Tensions between Iran and some European countries are mounting. Over the weekend, Iran cut off oil sales to the U.K. and France and the ripple effect is making its way across the pond here to America.
Here in Victoria, everyone is taking a hit, especially non-profit organizations like the Victoria Senior Citizens Center. Over 170 senior citizens in Victoria depend on the Senior Citizens Center to deliver one hot meal a day, give them a ride to the grocery store or pick them up from a doctor visit. But if the price at the pump keeps going up, the number of people the Senior Citizens Center helps will begin to go down.
"It's a great help. Several people in this neighborhood receive meals. Most of them are homebound totally, or mostly home bound,” said Janie Saldana, whose mother and uncle receive meals from the Senior Citizens Center.
At 87 and 84 years old, Janie Saldana’s mother and uncle both get one hot meal a day from the Victoria County Senior Citizens Center. But the rising cost of gas is taking a toll on their non-profit organization.
"If the price of gas continues to go up... That affects everything. If gas goes up, utilities go up, food costs go up, and the backlash leads to a vicious cycle,” explained Debra Garner with the Victoria County Senior Citizens Association.
Analysts are predicting the price of regular gas could reach $4.25 a gallon across the nation by the end of April. If that happens, the grant money and donations the Senior Citizens Center uses to help senior citizens live independently will not be enough.
"It gets to a point where we may have to lay off employees and scale back services. We can't go pick up people in Victoria who need transportation. We'll just have to go to feeding the home bound."
Saldana says she can step in to help if the Senior Citizens Center cant, but other families may not have that same option.
"There are a lot of seniors who have no one living in Victoria or near them who can take them to go get groceries. Not everyone has a schedule where they can leave work to make sure their loved one has something to eat," explained Saldana, “They're already in a position where they can't drive or go shopping or do what you and I can do at our age. So we are just trying to keep them viable to the community."
If you are interested in donating to the Victoria Senior Citizens Center to help ease their pain at the pump simply follow the link to their website at http://www.victoriaseniorcitizens.org/donateorvolunteer.html
