Gun Safety Courses And Accident Prevention

The shooting accident on Bayer Rd. that took place on Monday is the second time in less than a month that a minor has unintentionally been shot. Many kids are raised around guns and firearms here in South Texas. But are our kids properly trained on how to safely handle firearms?
There are laws in place to prevent minors from getting their hands on guns without adult supervision, but they do not seem to be working here in South Texas where we have had multiple incidents of minors being seriously injured or killed inadvertently. Authorities say there are things every child should know about guns, regardless of whether or not their parents own one.
"If you're one of those people who say I don't have guns and I don't want my kids to have guns...You probably still should train them, because they may be around a friend who has firearms...And they need to know when to walk away from a dangerous situation,” explained Chief Deputy Terry Simon with the Victoria County Sheriff's Office.
Simon also said that a large part of the problem may be cultural, explaining, "I think here in South Texas, people may think just because they grew up in the country that they know everything there is to know about guns. But really, that's not true. We really need to familiarize ourselves to a greater level."
When it comes to access, many adults use gun safes or simply hide their firearms. But Simons urges parents to take it a step further to avoid scenarios like this.
"You can never completely safe guard your firearm. If it's accessible to you, then it's accessible to others generally. The best thing to do is to safeguard the child with familiarity and safety training," commented Chief Simon.
According to Simon, adults as well as children can benefit from gun safety training. It is a course that could save you or your loved one’s life.
"What we recommend today is for everyone to seek real training in the safe operation of fire arms,” said Chief Simon.
Texas Parks and Wildlife offers a Hunter Safety Course free of charge that has a basic firearms safety component in it for both minors and adults.
